Brunch at Tertulia

(download)

A few months ago me and Hoon dropped by Tertulia to check out the food and see our friend, Harold, that was cooking there at the time.  The cuisine is Spanish and it quickly brought back memories of living in Spain.  Tertulia is relatively new and has been blowing up ever since it opened so to avoid the crowds and save a little money (dinner is $$$) we went for brunch.

We started off by sharing some churros con chocolate.  This classic Spanish dish was dear to my heart.  I loved eating churros con chocolate in Spain and would go with my friends or my senora who I lived with for a delicious treat.  I remember she took me one time before church and it was so fun to enjoy a leisurely breakfast with her.  Spainards favorite speed is leisurely.  It's awesome.  These were crunchy on the outside but chewy and perfecto on the inside.  Not to mention the chocolate.  I mean come on.  You can't really go wrong.  We also shared the coca which is like a flatbread with delicious meat and cheese.  Spanish pizza perhaps?  YUM.  Then it was time for entrees.  I ordered the desayuno tertulia and HoonKu ordered huevo y cordero (egg and lamb).  Both were flawless.  I loved the potato "nest" served with mine, it added some nice texture to my eggs and veggies.  Hoon is a big fan of polenta (which he kind of always forgets and has to ask me, "I like polenta, right?" it's pretty funny actually).  The poached egg + ragout + polenta were perfect for scooping onto toast.

We really enjoyed eating at Tertulia and it was really fun to share the flavors of Spain with Hoon.  I loved living there and I tell him about my escapades so it was a fun way to relive some of those memories through food.  Espana por vida!

Portlandia: The Tour

We're big fans of the show Portlandia on IFC.  Fred and Carrie are hilarious and the sketches are so random but awesome.  I follow Carrie on Twitter and last month she posted that they would be doing a live Portlandia tour show to kick of their 2nd season and they released more tickets for their shows in NYC.  So I quickly called Hoon to see if he'd want to go and he something along the lines of, "Do you even need to ask??"  so I scooped up 2 tix and before we knew it we were on our way to see them live!  The show was in Williamsburg which is not far but can be annoying to get to from our part of Brooklyn.  Requires going on the G and L trains both of which are known for being less than reliable.  I feel like everyone in NYC thinks of the G train as the sad cast off train that no one wants to hang out with.  It's not even like a normal length like its way shorter than the rest of the trains.  But, I digress.  Anyway, we made our way to the Music Hall of Williamsburg and it actually reminded me a lot of the El Rey theater in LA.  Not too big but a good size and ledges on the side where short people can actually see over the crowd.

The show was awesome.  They are super talented both in comedy and music.  It was a combination of live performance stuff (talking about sketches, playing music etc) and sneak peak videos from the upcoming 2nd season.  Even Toni and Candice our favorite feminist bookstore owners showed up.  Amazing.  There was also a surprise visit from Ad-Rock!  Perfect for a show in Brooklyn.  It was a really fun night and one of the first nights that felt like we were settling into our new lives here.  We used to do this kind of stuff all the time in LA and it was nice to get back to that.  I snapped a few pics and I wanted to share my favorite sketch they shared that night.  Below is the video.  The song is so catchy!  I find myself singing it all the time.

Brunch at Buttermilk Channel

Brunch is kind of a big deal here in NYC.  New Yorkers really love to get together and enjoy a delicious, leisurely meal with friends or family.  Now, I'm never against a delicious meal and in an effort to enjoy the city and our neighborhood as much as possible, we've been trying to do brunch more on the weekends.  Last weekend we decided to hit Buttermilk Channel to check out their brunch offerings.  Buttermilk Channel is super popular but luckily it's just a few blocks down from us so we were able to get their early and beat the rush.

True to Hoon and Kari fashion, we ordered too much but somehow managed to eat all of it.  I ordered the short rib hash, Hoon had the eggs benedict, and we ordered a short stack of pancakes on the side.  All were very delicious.  If you are craving something heavy and greasy and really want to indulge, definitely get the hash.  Hoon's eggs were poached to perfection and the pancakes were so light and fluffy they practically floated their way into my mouth.  Like magic!  We've been to dinner there before which was good, but I really liked brunch so we'll definitely to try the rest of the menu.

NYC Eats: Pizza at Keste

This weekend we had in-laws in town so after we finished up our Broadway show (we saw Memphis and it was awesome), we hit Keste in the West Village for a late night snack.  We got there just before they closed so we got our food quick and service was great.  Hoon's sister ordered a couple of pies she's gotten before, the Pizza del Papa and another vegetarian one loaded with lots of goodies (sorry not sure which one).  The crust was light and crunchy and they were big enough to share between 5 people.  I'm more of a tradtitional pizza girl (more pepperoni please) but I thought these were pretty good.  My favorite part, though, was the dessert pizza.  I've had dessert pizzas before and I've never been terribly excited about them but this one was really good. Nutella pizza!  The crust was warm and crunchy with a good bit of chew and topped with powdered sugar.  Reminded me of a crepe only with more texture and crunch which I love.  All I needed was a side of peanut butter and I would have been in heaven.

a taste of fall: pumpkin chocolate chip cookies

(download)

oh how i love these cookies.  why don't i make them year round?  i always just feel like i can only cook them when October rolls around, but they are soo comforting and delicious!  they are a bite of fall in your mouth.  they have a cake-like, moist consistency that i really enjoy.  the recipe is very simple and basic and is perfect for doctoring any which wayyou like.  like more cinnamon?  feel like adding nutmeg?  or nuts?  this is a great, basic recipe for that.  hoon likes it with less spices so i keep ours pretty simple, but they are still delish.  enjoy!

nyc chinatown eats

The other night we got together with Hyeku and her friend, Tom, to spend an evening in Chinatown.  We LOVE going to Shanghai Cafe for their soup dumpling's but Tom is an NYC native born and raised in Chinatown so he wanted to show us some new spots.  On our way to the restaurant we passed by the huge entrance to the Manhattan Bridge and the sign welcoming drivers to the city.  Kind of apropos for us NYC newbies.

I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant he took us to.  Tom pretty much just ordered in Chinese a bunch of stuff for us and it was tasty.  We started with this egg/wrap thing that had beans and mushrooms.  The flavors were subtle and it had a dipping sauce that went with it.  We also started with an order or fried and steamed soup dumplings.  Can't go wrong there.  Then we tried the Chinese version of jajamyun.  We all really liked that as well.   Finally we finished with a chicken dish.  Dang, I seriously cannot remember the name of anything, hope the photos speak for themselves!

As if we hadn't stuffed our faces enough, we stopped by Tai Pan for my favorite Chinese pastry: egg custard tarts.  Oh mama.  Even Serious Eats agrees that this place is one of the best in the city for those little treats.  The lady in the picture looking at the camera was telling me "NO PICTURES" but I couldn't help myself.  We also got a couple coconut buns and I think a lemon roll number.  And FINALLY, we stopped by TenRen's Tea Time for a lychee boba drink.  So much good food, and that's just 1 neighborhood! I think we're going to like living here...
